In a recent study, MultOil, produced by Enzymotec, displayed a synergistic health effect to reduce the risk for coronary heart disease. The study showed that olive-based MultOil, enriched with phytosterol-ester and DAG, was more potent than the combination of olive oil and phytosterol-esters in its ability to reduce macrophage peroxide content and macrophages superoxides release. The oxidation process of macrophages is a critical stage of the atheroschlerotic plaque formation cascade. Therefore, according to the company, the decreased macrophage oxidative stress implies that MultOil can reduce the risk for coronary heart disease through multiple pathways.
